District set to celebrate Bike to School Week

Pupils at local schools are getting ready for this year's National Bike to School Week.

Pupils at local schools are dusting down their bikes and pumping up their tyres in readiness for this year's National Bike to School Week celebrations.

The Lancaster District is no exception and having the status as a Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT) boasting 23 designated Sustrans Bike It Schools, progress is already well underway in encouraging scores more youngsters to do just that.

From the 20 – 24 April, Sustrans Bike It Officers, Kathy Bashford and Damian Bonsall will be stepping up activities at several schools in Lancaster and Morecambe to encourage pupils who don’t normally ride to school to give it a go.

Special assemblies will take place at Skerton, Ryelands, Sandylands, Mossgate, Greatwood and Willow Lane primary schools whilst Skerton High School, Lancaster will be marking the week with the launch of an after-school Bike It Club.

All schools taking part in the virtual around the world bike race will be able to claim double the miles if they cycle to school during the week.

At one of the most successful local Bike It primary schools, Willow Lane, young cyclists will be treated to a healthy Bike It Breakfast, a visit from Dr. Bike, Learn to Cycle sessions for its younger pupils and the unveiling of a new cycle shelter, largely funded by Sustrans and the Cycling Demonstration Town Project.

Bolton-le-Sands, Westgate, Ryelands, Torrisholme and St. Mary's Primary Schools and Morecambe High School are also set to benefit from new shelters soon.

If you want to get involved during Bike to School Week, Kathy and Damian will be leading two fun family bike rides for parents and children to enjoy after school.
Wednesday, 22 April - along Morecambe Promenade to Heysham. Meet at 3.45pm at the Morecambe Yacht Club (opposite Morecambe Town Hall).

Thursday, 23 April – along the stunning River Lune path towards the Crook O’Lune and back. Meet at 3.45pm on Lancaster's Millennium Bridge.

Everyone welcome.
