The new parish council, which came into being today (April 1) will comprise 26 councillors for the following wards (which follow the existing city council ward boundaries with the exception of small areas of Westgate and Torrisholme which are already included in Heaton with Oxcliffe Parish):
Parish Ward Number of Parish Councillors
Torrisholme 5
Bare 3
Poulton 5
Harbour 5
Westgate 5
Heysham North 3
To help people find out more about how to stand for election and what it means to be a parish councillor, two information evenings are being held in Morecambe Town Hall on Wednesday April 22 at 5.30pm and on Monday April 27 at 6.30pm.
Nomination papers will be available for collection at both these sessions or separately direct from the Elections Office at Lancaster Town Hall from April 20 2009 – email elections@lancaster.gov.uk or telephone 01524 582905 to request a pack or for any advice relating to the elections process. Nominations will need to be returned to Lancaster Town Hall by May 7.
Candidates for election to Morecambe Parish Council must meet normal electoral qualifications (i.e. be over 18, a UK, Commonwealth or EU citizen, registered to vote in the parish or work within the parish or live within three miles of the boundary) and will need to submit a set of nomination papers which will include two signatures of people in the parish ward willing to support them.
Those elected on June 4 will serve as a carish councillor for a two year period. Further full elections will be held in May 2011 at the same time as the city council elections and other parish elections within the district.
Until the elections the parish council will be run by a ‘Shadow Council’ - a working group of existing city councillors.
