Lancaster City Council calls for nominations for prestigious volunteering award

Nominate the district's unsung heroes.

Lancaster City Council is encouraging the community to nominate the district’s unsung heroes for a special award.

Nominations are being sought for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, a prestigious National Honour equivalent to the MBE.

Coun David Kerr, cabinet member for the voluntary sector, said: “Voluntary groups across the Lancaster district are vital to all aspects of community life, however, they sometimes aren’t recognised for the outstanding contributions they make.
“The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service celebrates the work of voluntary groups across the UK who, in many cases, have dedicated themselves to improving local people’s lives for many years.
“If there is a group in your area who you believe makes a significant difference to their community and deserves recognition, get out there and nominate them.”

Seventy-nine voluntary groups from across the UK were selected for the 2008 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, increasing the total number of winning groups to over 600 since its creation by Her Majesty to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 2002. Previous winners include Lancaster-based CancerCare, which won an award in 2003.

Nominations by members of the public who have been helped personally or witnessed the benefits of a group’s work in their community can be made at any time of the year by visiting www.queensawardvoluntary.gov.uk and downloading nomination forms in pdf or word format.

In common with the UK National Honours, there are no deadlines for the receipt of nomination forms. Award nominations will be considered at any point within three years of the nomination. Therefore, nominations should not be made for a particular year's Award.
