Moorside pupils put the finishing touches to improved cycle route to school

Pupils from Moorside Primary School are putting the final touches to an improved cycle/footpath route by planting new trees.

Pupils from Moorside Primary School, Lancaster are putting the final touches to an improved cycle/footpath route to their school this week by planting new trees.

As part of Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT) Project, improvements were carried out last year to a cycle/footpath which links the Hala estate to the gates of Bike It primary schools - St. Bernadette's and Moorside and to Stepping Stones School on Bowerham Road.

Before the works were undertaken, this already popular shortcut from Gressingham Drive to Bowerham Road, bordered on one side by woodland, was regarded by residents to be dark, muddy and unsafe.

To make way for the revamp, a small number of trees and some undergrowth had to be removed from the woodland areas. To compensate for the loss, 45 new trees are now being planted in and around the school.

Len Guest, Head Teacher of Moorside Primary School said: "The cycle path has been a real improvement to the old cinder path and the children of all three schools can now cycle safely straight into their school yards. The benefits to the wider community are obvious too - with far more people using the cycle path as a link between home, the city and the university. Planting three new trees for every one tree taken out during the construction is providing us with a tree lined street, greenery and shade for all the children to share with our neighbours."
