Morecambe Visitor Information Centre opens on additional Sundays
Information Centre to open seven days a week.
Lancaster City Council has responded to increasing numbers of visitors to Morecambe by deciding to open the resort’s Visitor Information Centre for additional Sundays this spring and autumn.
The information centre normally only opens seven days a week during the summer months (June to September plus Bank Holidays) when the resort is at its busiest. At other times of the year the centre opens from Monday to Saturday.
But now, due to an increase in people rediscovering the joys of traditional seaside resorts such as Morecambe, the city council has opted to trial opening at either end of the summer season as well.
As a pilot scheme Morecambe VIC will also open from 11am to 3pm this year on Sundays in April, May, October and November.
The new opening arrangements started on Sunday (April 26) and proved an instant hit with 150 people through the doors in four hours.
Coun Shirley Burns, Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism, said: “Spring Sundays can be very busy in Morecambe and opening the Visitor Information Centre on those days will help the attractions, hotels and shops in the resort and across the district. Morecambe has seen growth in visitor numbers during the spring and autumn partly because of more people coming to see all the migratory birds in Morecambe Bay. Others come because of the sandy beaches or just to stroll along the promenade and enjoy a cup of tea in the cafes and hotels.”
