September guided cycle rides
Unlock our district's hidden treasures
LANCASTER City Council’s programme of guided cycle rides continues throughout September unlocking some of the district's hidden treasures.
Sunday, 7 September - ‘Women on Wheels’ guided cycle ride to Cockersands Abbey
An enjoyable 16 mile ride to the historic site of Cockersands Abbey, Cockerham via the Lune Estuary cycle path.
Founded in the 12th Century, the Abbey is steeped in history having been used as a leper hospital before becoming one of the richest houses in Lancashire.
After visiting the historic ruins the ride will continue to Glasson Dock for refreshments before returning home.
Saturday, 12 September - Heritage Ride
Get involved in celebrating our local heritage by taking part in a guided ride around Lancaster’s historical buildings and sites. This ride has been organised to coincide with this year’s Heritage Open Days (Thursday 10 – Sunday, 13 September).
This ride will be led at a leisurely pace both off and on-road with frequent stops at places of interest.
For more information about the open days visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk
Sunday, 13 September - Sunday in Sunderland
An enjoyable ride along one of the area’s least used cycle paths to the small, isolated village of Sunderland. The ride uses off-road paths and roads through Overton. There’ll be a stop for a refreshment break in Sunderland, with a chance to explore the local area.
Please note there are no shops in the village so riders will need to bring food/drinks.
However, on the same day the Sunderland Point Community Association are planning to hold a “Tea on the Green” event, where riders will be able to take advantage of the refreshments and home-baked cakes on sale.
Locals will be on hand to talk about the history of The Point and help identify any interesting wildlife including migratory birds that might be evident at the time.
There’s no need to book on any of these rides. All rides kick off from Lancaster’s Millennium Bridge at 11am.
