Hunt is on for fly-tippers

Lancaster City Council is on the hunt for fly-tippers who dumped four barrels of chemical waste in a car park at Warton Crag.

Lancaster City Council is on the hunt for fly-tippers who dumped four barrels of chemical waste in a car park at Warton Crag.

Members of the city council’s environmental health team were called out to the car park on Crag Road in Warton on Monday morning after the drums were spotted by a countryside ranger.

Four 45 gallon drums containing chemicals had been dumped on the car park and two were leaking a green substance.

In consultation with the police, fire and rescue service and Lancashire County Council, the area was cordoned off as a precaution.

Thanks to prompt action from all the agencies involved the leak was contained and there is no risk of harm to the public.

Coun David Kerr, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health, said: “It is disgraceful that someone has decided to simply dump these drums.

“Not only have they potentially endangered the general public and the environment, they have cost all the agencies involved in dealing with the incident precious time and money.

“If anyone has any information on who is responsible for dumping these drums I would urge them to get in touch and let us know.”

Initial tests suggest the drums, which were removed on Tuesday afternoon by specialist contractors, contained a solvent.

Anyone with information on the incident should telephone 01524 582491.
