Morecambe’s reputation has received another boost with the news that the resort has been branded the country’s Best Reinvented Seaside Town.
The town has received the accolade in this year’s Coast Magazine Awards, beating rivals Blackpool and Folkestone.
Readers were asked to nominate entries to the awards and, following the town’s shortlisting, Lancaster City Council was asked to put together a case for why Morecambe should win the category.
A panel of judges representing all aspects of coastal life fiercely debated the entries before declaring Morecambe the winner in the Best Reinvented Seaside Town category.
In recognition of the award the council has been given a plaque, which now has pride of place in Morecambe’s Visitor Information Centre.
Coun Evelyn Archer, Cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration in Morecambe, said: “This award is testament to the hard work put in by the city council, businesses and the community to regenerate Morecambe over the last decade.
“The town is on the cusp of a renaissance and it’s essential that all sectors of the community work together to ensure Morecambe continues to be a place that people want to live, work and visit.”
Since the 1990s millions of pounds have been invested in Morecambe.
Major achievements have included:
* A remodelled promenade and stone jetty
* Award winning Tern of Events public art project
* Happy Mount Park’s Splash Park
* Refurbishment of the Midland Hotel
* The success of Neighbourhood Management in Poulton and the West End
* Coastal defences (including new sand on the beach)
* New retail park
