Council invites suggestions for new allotment sites

Anyone with an interest in the provision of more allotments in the district is invited to attend the next meeting of Lancaster City Council’s Allotments Task Group.

Anyone with an interest in the provision of more allotments in the district is invited to attend the next meeting of Lancaster City Council’s Allotments Task Group.

The Task Group will meet at Lancaster Town Hall on Wednesday January 21 at 5pm, to discuss how it can contribute to securing more land for allotments.

Under the Small Holdings and Allotments Act, 1908, local authorities have a duty to consider providing more sites in a particular locality if six or more residents from that area request it.

Lancaster City Council has already received requests from six or more residents of Higher Heysham, Caton and the West End of Morecambe.

The council currently owns twelve allotment sites, most of which are in Lancaster, and there are long waiting lists for plots.

Councillor Emily Heath, Chair of the Allotments Task Group said  “We are interested to hear from residents who would either like to request more allotments in their area, or suggest pieces of land which may be suitable for new allotment sites. I expect that it will not be easy to create more sites, but I think we should give it our best shot, given that allotments have so many health, environmental and community benefits.”

The Task Group will also be developing an allotments strategy, and considering criteria for assessing the suitability of land for allotments.

Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting to contribute to the discussion, or to submit requests for new allotment sites or suggestions for land that may be suitable for allotments by email to jglenton@lancaster.gov.uk

Allotment pitches are just one of a wide range of services provided to you by Lancaster City Council. These services would not be possible without the support of the £3.52 which, on average, you pay in council tax.
