Council steps up patrols in Happy Mount Park in response to vandalism

Lancaster City Council is stepping up patrols in Morecambe’s Happy Mount Park in response to a recent spate of vandalism.

Lancaster City Council is stepping up patrols in Morecambe’s Happy Mount Park in response to a recent spate of vandalism.

Since the turn of the year the park has been targeted a number of times by vandals.

The first incident took place sometime overnight January 2/3 when fencing around the park’s pond in the Japanese Gardens was damaged.

Although the fencing was repaired, it did not last long as it was damaged again overnight January 7/8 and again had to be repaired.

Overnight January 9/10 there was further damage in the park when a shed was broken into. A number of cans of paint and wood stain were taken and thrown over a footpath. The words ‘Beast’ and the initials ‘JL’ were also scrawled on the footpath and fence panels around the children’s play area were also removed.

In the last incident, on January 11, a window of the park’s café was smashed.

In response to the vandalism the council, with assistance from the police, will be patrolling the park during the night in an attempt to prevent further incidents.

Coun Jane Fletcher, cabinet member for leisure, said: “I am appalled by these acts of vandalism.

“Happy Mount Park is a tremendous local asset enjoyed by a large number of residents and visitors alike.

“It is a great shame that those involved in these recent destructive activities cannot use the park, which is funded by the council tax payer, constructively rather than cause such damage.”

Cultural Services is just one of a wide range of services provided to you by Lancaster City Council. These services would not be possible without the support of the £3.52 which, on average, you pay in council tax.
