Formidable Scottish trio, Lau, will perform at the Platform on Saturday February 14.
Lau are three of the finest and most innovative exponents of modern traditional music in Britain today. Their now infamous live shows are a must see experience with an energy and musicianship which is spellbinding.
Over the last few years, Lau have been the nominees and recipients of many awards and won the ‘Best Group’ Award in the 2008 BBC Folk Awards. They have been nominated for ‘Best Live Act’ and ‘Best Group’ in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2009.
Lau are Kris Drever on guitar and vocals, Martin Green on accordion and Aidan O’Rourke on fiddle.
Kris Drever comes from the Orkney Islands and has been a sideman for Eddi Reader, Kate Rusby, Roseanne Cash, Heidi Talbot, John McCusker and Phil Cunningham and many more. As well as being a member of Lau, he also performs as a solo artist and is a member of a trio with John McCusker and Roddy Woomble.
Aidan O’Rourke is a member of supergroup Blazin’ Fiddles and is also a composer. He is much sought after as a teacher and session musician and has recorded with Runrig, Karine Polwart and Karen Matheson. He is also a member of Colin Steele’s Stramash and appears occasionally with Karine Polwart and Scotland’s unofficial folk orchestra, The Unusual Suspects.
Martin Green has played with many great names of folk music including Eliza Carthy, Joan Baez, Linda Thomson and The Be Good Tanyas and has written music for several theatre and film productions.
In the last two years Lau have gone from being exciting new boys to undisputed kingpins of the current UK folk scene. A heavy touring schedule has taken them to Sweden, Spain, Canada, America, France, Belgium, Germany and Japan in the space of twelve months. A crammed touring season planned for 2009 will take Lau’s impressive live show around the world again.
