Silverdale primary school claim top prize
Lancaster City Council hosted its annual small primary schools Kwik Cricket Festival at Westgate Cricket Club on Tuesday 30 June.
The event which saw 11 teams competing was in conjunction with the Lancashire Cricket Board sponsored by Asda.
Rain didn't stop play as the teams were drawn in three groups with the top team going through to the semi-finals with the best second placed team.
Our Lady of Lourdes from Carnforth edged past Overton by one run to win Group A. St Bernadette’s brushed aside the challenge from Over Kellet and Wray to win Group B.
Last year’s winners Silverdale Primary School were looking to retain their title. They started with two easy wins followed by a group decider against Warton. They also had two big wins from their games and both teams knew that victory would guarantee a place in the semi-finals.
After a close game, Silverdale won Group C but Warton also qualified as the best overall runner up, just beating Overton on runs scored.
In the semi finals Warton and St Bernadette’s were involved in one of the closest games ever with the scores level. However Warton progressed to the final by losing fewer wickets.
In yet another thrilling match, Silverdale beat Our Lady of Lourdes by 12 runs to set up a repeat of the group game with Warton in the final.
After scoring 253-4, Silverdale were confident of winning the game but Warton started the last two overs on 247-4. Each time a competitor is out, five runs are deducted from the total. With a six and an out in the second to last over, Warton were favourites at the start of the last over needing just six runs to win.
Warton knew that that key to this would be to lose no wickets but after a brilliant spell of bowling, fielding and catching by Silverdale, the Warton side felt the pressure losing three wickets without scoring a run.
The sun came out and this remarkable last over gave a jubilant Silverdale team the trophy again.
The winners and runners up each received trophies for their efforts on the day with all competitors receiving a certificate and medal for taking part.
Thanks go to Westgate Cricket Club for hosting the event again.
