Yellow Pages recycled into cash for schools and trees

Arkholme Primary School is Gold Oak award winner

SCHOOLS across the Lancaster district are celebrating their success in the Yellow Woods Challenge – the simple, educational and fun environmental campaign for schools.

Run by Yellow Pages, working in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Lancaster City Council, the campaign rewards schools for recycling old copies of the Yellow Pages.

Arkholme CE Primary School is the Gold Oak award winner and receives £300 for recycling 11.11 directories per pupil. Silverdale CE Primary School won the Silver Birch award and £200 while Over Wyresdale Cawthornes Primary School carried off the £100 Bronze Beech award.

Silverdale CE Primary School scooped the £100 bonus prize from Yellow Pages for being most improved.

For every pound given to schools, Yellow Pages has donated a matching pound to the Woodland Trust – the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. Sue East, corporate fundraiser from the Trust said: “The money from the Yellow Woods Challenge supports our Tree For All campaign, which aims to plant 12 million native trees – that’s one for every child in the UK.”

The top six schools have also won a year’s free membership to the Trust’s ‘Nature Detectives Club’ courtesy of Yellow Pages. Members receive regular educational materials to make learning about nature fun throughout the year.

Coun Jon Barry, Lancaster City Council’s Cabinet member for recycling, said: “I’d like to congratulate all the winning schools and say ‘Thank you’ to everyone who made a contribution to the environment by recycling their old Yellow Pages directory.”

A total of 3,638 old directories were collected and are being recycled.

The schools will find out in November how their directory recycling scores compare with other schools taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge in England/Northern Ireland/Scotland/Wales. Recycling champions will win £1,000 from Yellow Pages.
