Cara Dillon to perform at The Platform
An evening of traditional folk music
Irish singer Cara Dillon will be performing with her band at The Platform in Morecambe on Friday June 26.
Born in 1975 in Dungiven Co Derry, Cara demonstrated her striking vocal ability in winning the All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy at the tender age of 14 and a year later she was in her first band, Oige.
She went on to sing with De Dannan and then folk supergroup Equation, which she joined in 1995 as a replacement to Kate Rusby. Cara found her soulmate Sam Lakeman in the band and the pair decided to try their luck as a duo.
However, none of their projects managed to fulfil their ambitions until in 2001 they released a beautiful melancholy self titled album of folk songs which was met with astonishing critical and popular acclaim.
The combination of Cara’s expressive and impressive vocals and Sam’s lyrical piano immediately placed Cara firmly in the forefront of the new generation of young traditional artistes.
The album won a number of awards and soon Cara and Sam became one of the most sought after acts in the land.
The track ‘There Were Roses’ from their second album was originally recorded at the behest of Billy Connolly to accompany his TV series about Great Britain. An overtly political song about the troubles in Northern Ireland, Cara’s rendition brought her rare talent to a much wider audience in the UK.
Cara also sang ‘Man in the Rain’ on Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells 3, appeared live and on record with Ghostland and on the famous Women’s Heart Tour with Dolores Keane, Mary Black, Eleanor McEvoy and Maura O’Connell.
On tour now with her own band, Cara is promoting her new CD ‘Hill of Thieves’, which has a significantly more acoustic sound than previous albums and sees a return to her roots with an outstanding collection of traditional songs
The show will start at 8pm and tickets cost £15 adults, £14 concessions from the box office on 01524 582803.
