Caton St Paul’s triumph in first ever Dodgeball Festival
Lancaster City Council held its first annual Dodgeball Festival at Salt Ayre Sports Centre.
Lancaster City Council held its first annual Dodgeball Festival at Salt Ayre Sports Centre.
The festival was attended by 12 teams from nine local primary schools and was open to boys and girls in years 4, 5 and 6.
Scott Wilcock, Leisure Development Officer said: “Dodgeball has proved to be one of the most popular activities we provide children in the many schools we work in so we decided to run a festival to give children the opportunity to show off their throwing, catching and dodging skills.”
The competition was split into two groups of six. It was these early group games that provided some of the best action of the day. With four courts running at the same time the spectators couldn’t keep up with the fast and furious pace of the children.
There were some very well contested games during the group stages that saw the game between St Mary’s A and St Bernadette’s draw 16 each. It was Caton St Paul’s A team that everyone was watching during the group stages as they winning their games with some impressive scores – one of them finishing 36 to 8.
The format of the competition meant that the top two teams from each group would go through to the semi finals. These teams were Moorside A v St Peter’s A and Caton St Paul's A v St Mary’s A. Both of these proved very close contests but Caton St Paul’s A continued their high scoring streak winning the game 19 to 6. The other semi was a much closer contest with St Peter’s A narrowly scraping through by 13 to 8.
The final, between St Peter's A and Caton St Paul’s A, saw the two most consistent teams of the day competing in what was a very close final. With many spectators including children, teachers and parents cheering on, it was Caton St Paul's A that proved too strong for St Peter's A winning 14 to 8.
Caton St Paul’s A keep the Dodgeball Festival Cup for one year and hopefully will be back to defend it next year.
All the teams that took part played the competition in the spirit in which it was intended, with the main aims being fair play, fun, enjoyment and participation.
Every competitor received a medal for their efforts.
