Super Scotforth St Paul’s take the title in a thrilling Tag Rugby Festival final

Lancaster City Council Tag Rugby competition.

On a fine sunny day at the home of the Vale of Lune RUFC on Powder House Lane, 18 teams of primary school children locked horns in battle with the same goal in mind – to win the prestigious Lancaster City Council Tag Rugby title.

Winning the title would also see their team representing the district at the district finals to be held at Preston Sports Arena in May.

The festival consisted of four leagues, all of which had their epic games and flowing Rugby was produced throughout.

In group one, Slyne A versus Halton St Wilfrid’s proved to be a fizzing encounter with Slyne edging out as winners by 7 points to 5.

Skerton St Luke’s young outfit looked very handy and bounced back from an early defeat from the eventual group two winners Moorside A to win their next two games and draw their last.

Group three was the group with most flair and was nicknamed the “Champagne group.” Ellel St John’s even though losing all their games never let their heads drop and played an outstanding match against Wray.

Group 4’s big two; Scotforth St Pauls and Bolton-le-Sands clashed in an epic encounter. With Scotforth St Pauls running away eventual winners with a score of 8 points to 6.

So the semi-finals were set - Bowerham versus Moorside and Silverdale versus Scotforth St Paul’s and as the heat soared so did the skills on the pitch.

Moorside A defeated Bowerham in a low scoring, tense affair 5 points to 3. Both sides had a “mean” defence with only moments of sheer brilliance from both teams resulting in a score.

While on pitch two “the game of the festival” was taking place! Silverdale with their flamboyant attacking style masterminded by head coach Claire Bloomfield traded tries with the impressive Scotforth St Paul’s. In a game that could have gone either way in the end Scotforth St Paul’s were triumphant, winning 8-7.

The final was set; Scotforth St Paul’s would meet Moorside A. After full time the score where level and “golden try” was the only way to separate the two teams. Scotforth St Paul’s took the initiative and scored taking the title.

Both teams deserved to win and the sportsmanship and attitude shown by both teams was a testament to their school.

Lancaster City Council would like to thank all the referees, Martin Powell the RFU coach for the area, the Vale of Lune RUFC for the use of its facilities and all the schools who took part.
