Lancaster City Council has launched a campaign to attract group organisers to visit the area using famous Morecambe Bay potted shrimps.
The shrimps were given out to group organisers at the Great Days Out Fair, a national group trade exhibition held recently in Bolton, along with a copy of Lancaster City Council’s new Group Organiser’s Guide 2009.
The campaign launch attracted enquiries from more than 2,000 different group organisers as they enjoyed the ‘City, Coast and Countryside’ themed display, including a model castle and miniature versions of Morecambe Bay and the Lune Valley.
Group organisers were then invited to enter a free prize draw to win an overnight stay at the Midland Hotel, a tour of Lancaster Castle and an ‘Xplorer’ ticket, while enjoying Morecambe’s tastiest fayre.
The winner of the prize draw was Colin Crosby, director of Heritage Tours Leicester, who said: “The shrimps were magnificent. I have never considered the Morecambe and Lancaster area as a group destination before, we normally just go to The Lake District. I will look forward to my prize visit and then schedule the area into our group trips to the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales.”
Coun Shirley Burns, Cabinet member for tourism and events said: "It’s very positive news that the launch and display attracted so many enquiries from exactly the type of people we need to target. The visitor economy is so important to the district and group organisers can now return home and plan their group trips to come and visit and spend their money with us in the near future."
The Group Organiser’s Guide is now available from Lancaster City Council for anyone planning a group trip into the area. For further information email rdyer@lancaster.gov.uk or visit www.citycoastcountryside.co.uk
