‘Walk the Talk’ Challenge Awards 2009

Children across the Lancaster district are being challenged to ‘Walk the Talk’ and be in with a chance of winning a £1,000 prize.

Children across the Lancaster district are being challenged to ‘Walk the Talk’ and be in with a chance of winning a £1,000 prize.

Linco Communications Ltd has teamed up with Lancaster City Council to develop an annual awards scheme for primary schools - the Walk the Talk Challenge Awards.

This exciting new venture will see children from local primary schools leading and developing their own community projects.

The three year scheme started this month (February 2009) and is initially open to primary schools in Morecambe and Heysham.

Schools will have until the end of July to develop their project and put it into action and  all the entries will be showcased at a special awards ceremony in September.

All schools involved will receive a small prize for taking part, provided by Lancaster City Council whilst, the project judged to be the best will win a £1,000 prize from Linco Communications.

Colin Carruthers, managing director of Lancaster-based telecoms company Linco Communications, said: “Children are bursting with ideas and we want to encourage those ideas; that is why it is so important that the children don’t just take part but actually drive the project.  We are delighted to be working so closely with Lancaster City Council and together we are determined to make this successful for schools in the area.”

Coun Jane Fletcher, Cabinet member for children and young people, added: “This is a great opportunity for the children of Lancaster district to improve their local environment. The challenge asks children to project manage their own work, with the support of a mentor from the community, so Walk the Talk will really benefit their local area.”

Children will be asked to undertake projects based on the five themes of Every Child Matters:

* Be healthy
* Stay safe
* Enjoy and achieve things
* Give something back to your community
* Have enough money to live happily

The ‘Walk the Talk’ Challenge will be implemented in 3 phases:

* Year 1 (2009) will concentrate on the seaside towns of Morecambe and Heysham
* Year 2 (2010) will concentrate on rural areas, including Carnforth
* Year 3 (2011) will concentrate on the historic city of Lancaster
