Bikeability - 'cycling proficiency' for the 21st Century!

Youngsters can gain the skills and confidence to cycle on today’s roads.

Can you remember doing your Cycling Proficiency training?

The 21st Century equivalent – 'Bikeability' has rolled into the district to give youngsters the skills and confidence to cycle on today’s roads.

Many of us already know that cycling is enjoyable and healthy, that it’s good for the environment and a great way of saving money. However, it's important that everyone learns how to do it safely and that’s why thousands of children across England have already got their Bikeability award.

Closer to home, over 1000 pupils in many local schools have already benefitted from the training but Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Team want many more children to reap the benefits.

Thanks to funding from the Department for Transport, the team can now offer free Bikeability training to more groups of children and will be running two free Bikeability courses for children aged 9-16 as part of the council's October half term activities programme. Each course will consist of four morning or afternoon sessions at Salt Ayre Sports Centre.

A copy of the full half term activities programme and booking form is now available at Salt Ayre Sports Centre, town halls and visitor information centres at Lancaster and Morecambe and the council's community pools at Hornby, Carnforth and Heysham. Copies can also be downloaded from the council's website - www.lancaster.gov.uk/holidayprogramme.

The council’s Cycling Town Team also hopes that other Bikeability courses can be arranged in schools or at weekends for other youth groups. These would be offered free of charge and take place at venues across the district.

If you are involved in a youth organisation and think this training would be of benefit to your group, please contact the council’s Cycling Town Project Manager, Rachel Scott on 01524 582392. Alternatively, you can send an email to celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk.

There would need to be a minimum of eight children who are willing to commit themselves to four sessions of around 2 - 21/2 hours each week for a period of two to four weeks.
