New bike shelter arrives at school

Pupils of Ryelands Primary School were given another great reason to cycle to school recently, thanks to the arrival of a brand new bike shelter.

Jointly funded by Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Town Project, Sustrans and the school, the shelter was officially opened by the Mayor of Lancaster, Roger Sherlock earlier this week.

Being one of 12 Bike It schools in the district, the children set to benefit from the new facility have already enjoyed a wide range of cycling incentives including Bikeability training, cycle to school days, bike maintenance courses and going head to head with other schools in the virtual Round the World Cycle Challenge.

During the summer term, many children took part in the Wheely Wednesday initiative. Every pupil who chose to cycle to school on that day each week was given a raffle ticket and the chance of winning a brand new bike.

The lucky winners - Kirsty Furness, Shannon Hare and James Price are now looking forward to keeping their prizes safe and dry in the new shelter during the winter months.

If you are interested in becoming a Bike It school, or would like support and information about cycling to school, contact Damian Bonsall, Sustrans Bike It Officer by e-mailing him at damian.bonsall@sustrans.org.uk
