Have a say on Lancaster's historic areas
LANCASTER City Council is to carry out an indepth review of two of Lancaster’s most historic areas – and it needs your help.
Work is about to start on an assessment of the Lancaster City and Castle conservation areas.
The assessment will help the council to preserve the architecture and history of the two areas and will include a review of the current boundaries.
A public workshop to discuss the assessment will take place on Monday September 28 between 5.30pm and 7.30pm in the Ashton Hall (in Lancaster Town Hall).
The event is open to all and will give those that attend the chance to influence things such as where any new boundaries might be drawn.
Coun Eileen Blamire, Cabinet member with responsibility for planning policy, said: “The Lancaster district has one of the largest historic environments in the North West, with more than 1,300 listed buildings, 39 scheduled ancient monuments and 37 conservation areas.
“Part of Lancaster City Council’s role in managing this important wealth of heritage assets involves the production of conservation area appraisals.
“To do that we need the help of the people who live and work in these historic areas.”
The event will be facilitated by The Conservation Studio, who have been appointed to conduct the appraisal. They will provide an initial presentation to explain the effects of conservation area designation, why regular review is necessary and the scope for heritage management.
There are likely to be group discussions related to specific areas and topics.
A questionnaire will also give everybody the opportunity to make comments after the event.
There will then be further public consultation following the preparation of a draft appraisal.
