Cemetery shortlisted for 2009 awards
Torrisholme Cemetery has made the shortlist in the Cemetery of the Year Awards 2009.
The awards are organised by the Memorial Awareness Board with the aim of raising standards in burial grounds, encourage choice for the bereaved and inspire communities to take pride in their cemeteries.
Torrisholme Cemetery was entered into the 5-15 acre category and following a visit by one of the judges could also be in with a chance of scooping the special Co-operative Funeralcare Award for Community Involvement.
On judging each cemetery, all aspects of the site are taken into consideration. These include customer care, maintenance of grounds and buildings, safety and security, availability of choice to the bereaved, on-site facilities such as bins, taps, shelters and toilets (including those for the disabled). Environmental enhancements such as wild flower or conservation areas and the encouragement and protection of biodiversity are also taken into consideration.
Coun David Kerr, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing said: “On behalf of Lancaster City Council, I am delighted that Torrisholme Cemetery has made the judges’ prestigious short list and hope that all the hard work and effort by the council’s cemeteries team and the Friends of Torrisholme Cemetery group is further rewarded at the awards ceremony.”
The awards ceremony will take place on 29 September at the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management Conference.
