Birds bikes and binoculars

Come along and join local birders on a birdwatching cycle tour of the Lune Estuary and Morecambe Bay Nature Reserve on Sunday 16 May from 11am.

Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town Team, with the expertise of Richard Miller, Assistant warden at RSPB Leighton Moss, have organised this wonderfully scenic trip with the chance to get some gentle exercise and see and hear newly arrived summer migrants and resident species, many of which will be in the throes of the breeding season.

It’s a great time to hear songbirds as they sing for territory. These include Chaffinch, Whitethroat, Meadow pipit, Willow and Sedge warblers and more (you never know what may turn up).
On the salt marsh and mudflats, you might encounter Lapwings (tumbling and calling as they defend their nests), Redshank, Skylarks, Curlew and a host of other wading birds.

The ride will take a couple of hours, be at a leisurely pace over flat terrain and aimed at beginners as well as those with some birdwatching experience. There will be a number of scheduled stops en route to hear and identify birds in the hedgerows, as well as spotting birds on the mudflats beyond,
along with other impromptu stops in the event of something interesting making an appearance.

Riders should meet at the Millennium Bridge (Lancaster end) at 11am – everyone welcome free of charge. Don't forget to bring your binoculars!

This ride is just one of many featured in Lancaster City Council's new 2010 Rides and Events Guide. These are available, free of charge, from Lancaster and Morecambe Visitor Information Centres, the council's customer service centres at Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls and local libraries. Copies can also be downloaded from the cycling website www.celebratingcycling.org/eventsguide.

Alternatively you can send your address details to the Cycling Demonstration Town Team by email to celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk or by telephone - 01524 582392 or 582616.
