Council cracks down on second hand car sellers

Environmental enforcement officer Vince Ravetta posts a notice on a second hand car for sale on Marine Road in Morecambe
SECOND hand car sellers in Morecambe have come under the spotlight by Lancaster City Council.
Last week the council targeted cars parked on Marine Road between the Battery and Happy Mount Park which had ‘for sale’ notices posted in their windows.
Each car was issued with a notice informing them that they were potentially breaking street trading legislation.
The stretch which was targeted is classed as a ‘prohibited street’ under street trading regulations.
This means that except in certain circumstances selling items on the road – including cars – is prohibited.
Peter Loker, corporate director (community services) said: “The city council is committed to the regeneration of Morecambe and encouraging people to visit and spend time in the town.
“Having cars parked for sale on the road is something we want to discourage as it not only makes the promenade look untidy and unsightly, it is also a distraction for drivers.
“As we move into the summer, these cars also remove valuable parking spaces in the town for visitors.
“I’m sure many of those parking their cars for sale did not realise they were potentially breaking the street trading regulations and that is why, at first, we have taken the approach of advising them of their responsibilities.
“Hopefully they will now find an alternative way of advertising their cars for sale and we won’t have to take formal proceedings against them.”
