Cycling proficiency for the 21st century

Bikeability is the all new cycling training scheme for the 21st century.

Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town team have been successful in gaining funding for further Bikeability training in 2010/11 and so are now able to start booking sessions for the summer term and beyond at local schools and relevant youth organisations.

Many adults will remember doing their Cycling Proficiency Test but Bikeability is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

Cycling is healthy and fun but it's necessary to learn how to do it safely. This is why thousands of children will now have the chance to get their Bikeability award as part of a national scheme that is being rolled out across England.

This training has been offered to schools taking part in the Bike It project since 2007. Thanks to a government grant in 2009/10 the CDT team were able to offer this training to all local schools. Last year 641 local children took part in the Bikeability training and learned how to cycle safely.

If you are interested please get in touch. Courses consist of 4 sessions of around 2 - 21/2 hours, usually over 4 weeks. You need to have a minimum of 8 children (maximum of 12 per group) and they must be able to commit to all 4 sessions.

To make a booking or for more information please contact Rachel Scott, Cycle Project Co-ordinator on 01524 582392 or via email at rscott@lancaster.gov.uk.
