Launch of new coast to coast cycle route – Way of the Roses
Morecambe-born fashion designer Wayne Hemingway will be back in his home town on Saturday, September 11 for the launch of a brand new coast to coast cycle route.
The 170 mile route from Morecambe to Bridlington passes through the historic cities of Lancaster and York, and is aptly named the Way of the Roses.
On September 11, groups of cyclists, some dressed in red or white or carrying a red or white rose, will be riding the whole length of the route in sections. The first leg of the route will take cyclists from Morecambe to Settle.
At 11am keen cyclist Wayne Hemingway, along with the mayor of the City of Lancaster and councillors from Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council, will be unveiling the sign marking the official start point next to the Midland Hotel.
This will be followed at 11.15am by a historic 35 mile ride of the first part of the route from Morecambe to Settle.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the opening of the route and take part in the first official ride which follows the district’s dedicated cycle paths to the Crook O’Lune and then on-road routes to Settle. Riders can decide for themselves how far they cycle on the day and can join in the theme of the event by carrying a rose or dressing in red or white.
The ride is not guided, but will be well signposted and route plans are available.
A free rider’s pack including route plan, refreshment vouchers and more will be given to all participants.
Riders can book free bike return from Settle in advance if they don’t want to cycle back. Call 01524 582392 or email celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk to book in advance as places are limited.
Coun Jon Barry, cabinet member with responsibility for the district’s Cycling Demonstration Town Project said: “The Way of the Roses is a spectacular route which transforms 170 miles of roads and cycle tracks into a new leisure route for cyclists and walkers in the North of England. I am sure that it will prove extremely popular and be of great benefit to both the environment and the local economy.”
The launch coincides with the We Do Like to be Beside the Sea festival which takes place in Morecambe on the 11 and 12 September and promises to be a fun filled weekend of traditional seaside fun. Visit www.lancaster.gov.uk/seaside for full details.
