Women on Wheels

THERE'S lots on offer for women cyclists of all abilities over the next couple of months, including courses and guided rides.

Following the success of recent cycle training sessions for women, two more free courses are available to help improve confidence and skills both off and on road.

On-road skills training takes place on Saturday August 14, from 10am - 12pm or from 1pm – 3pm. Training will be on local roads, starting at Salt Ayre Sports Centre.

This course is designed to help women ride more safely and confidently in traffic. It will cover skills such as road positioning, passing parked cars, signalling and turning.

A women’s beginners cycle training course takes place on Saturday September 4, from 1pm - 3pm in a safe, traffic-free environment at Salt Ayre. Bikes can be borrowed from Salt Ayre.

This entirely off-road session is aimed at beginners and those lacking in confidence and basic skills. The focus will be on skills such as looking behind and signalling whilst maintaining balance and control. There will also be plenty of information about cycling on local roads, and advice on equipment and accessories.

Both courses are free, but must be booked in advance as places are limited.

There are also two activites just for women in September.

On Sunday September 5 an easy paced ride suitable for beginners starts at 11am from Lancaster’s Millennium Bridge and follows the scenic, traffic-free path to Crook O’Lune and back. This is an eight mile return ride and bikes can be loaned in advance by calling 01524 582392.

For the more adventurous, try the Women's Introduction to Mountain Biking taster session at Gisburn Forest. This ride on Saturday September 25 costs £20, which includes return transport, mountain bike hire and tuition.

Transport will be provided from Morecambe Town Hall at 9am, returning at approximately 3pm. Spaces are limited and must be booked in advance.

To reserve your space please contact Rachel at rscott@lancaster.gov.uk or call on 01524 582392.
