Busy weekend for Butterfly House

A celebratory opening event took place at the Butterfly House at Williamson Park last weekend.

Lancaster’s tropical rainforest, where exotic butterflies flutter elegantly around their leafy surroundings, opened on Saturday 12 February.

The Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Roger Sherlock, officially opened the event.

Visitors who came to support the opening were treated to free entry on Saturday. Throughout the weekend hundreds of people came to see the former Palm House which has been refurbished and stocked with flowers, trees, vines, foliage and colourful butterflies. Residing in the Butterfly House are some of the world's most beautiful species, including brilliant swallowtails, and cleverly camouflaged Owl butterflies. The pupae of new butterflies can be seen in a special display case and you can see the butterflies emerging from their chrysalis. There are also koi carp in the stream that flows around the forest.

Commenting, the Mayor said: "I'm so pleased that the Butterfly House has been refurbished. It is so good for the public to be able to interact with the butterflies, and to watch them emerge from their chrysalis is amazing."

Tickets to the Butterfly House, Park Life and Mini Beast Cave can be purchased from the shop and entry costs £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and students and £4.00 for concessions. The Butterfly House is a popular destination for school trips and guided talks are available demonstrating the life cycle of the beautiful creatures. Bookings can be made by telephoning 01524 33318.
