LOCAL school children were treated to a VIP trip to the Butterfly House at Williamson Park as a prize for entering a competition to design a flag and name the zoo.

The VIP trips took place on Friday 12 February and were in advance of the re-opening of the Butterfly House to members of the public.

Finn Kennedy, aged 6, from St Peter’s Cathedral primary school came up with the name of ‘Park Life’, the new name for the aviary, the bird house, and small mammals section.

Jessica Macluskie, age 11 from Greatwood primary school designed a new flag which has been made and will be flown outside the Butterfly House for all to see.

As part of their prize, they were allowed to bring their whole class along to see the Butterfly House now that it has been refurbished. The children were overawed with their experience and enjoyed spotting the colourful butterflies. They even managed to see some emerging from their chrysalis.

Chair of the Williamson Park board, Councillor Eileen Blamire said: “It is wonderful to have local children involved in reopening the Butterfly House and I’m sure they enjoyed being VIPs for the day. The Butterfly House has a host of new residents for people to come and meet and is one of Lancaster’s most beautiful attractions.”

The Butterfly House at Williamson Park will re-open to the public on Saturday 13th February at 10am. The Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Roger Sherlock is officially opening the event, alongside the board members of Williamson Park.

Tickets can be purchased from the shop and entry costs £4.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and students, £4.00 for concessions. The Butterfly House is a popular destination for school trips and guided talks are available demonstrating the life cycle of the beautiful creatures. Bookings can be made by telephoning 01524 33318.
