Local people are being invited to show how much they love their parks during national Love Parks Week.
This year’s Love Parks Week takes place between Saturday, 24 July and Sunday, 1 August 2010 when Lancaster City Council will be providing a packed programme of fun events for all ages.
Organised by parks charity GreenSpace to raise awareness of the importance of parks, this year’s focus will be on encouraging people to visit their local parks and show support for these valuable community assets.
Events are taking place across the council’s parks and range from guided tours of Williamson Park’s Butterfly House, Junior Ranger bird boxing in Happy Mount Park and Play Ranger den workshops, pond dipping, wildlife walks and much more.
For those who prefer something more relaxing, why not pop along to Happy Mount Park with a picnic on Sunday 25 July and Sunday 1 August at 2.30pm and enjoy Morecambe Brass Band in concert.
Coun June Ashworth cabinet member with responsibility for children and young people said: “Parks play a vital role in our communities and give people the opportunity to explore, play, have fun or simply relax in beautiful surroundings. Our district is blessed with numerous parks and open spaces and it would be great to see as many people as possible join us during the week of celebrations and benefit from everything our parks have to offer.”
For more information on Love Parks Week, including prices and details of events happening in local parks, visit www.lancaster.gov.uk/loveparksweek or telephone Morecambe or Lancaster Visitor Information Centres on 01524 582808/582394. Programmes are also available from customer service centres at Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls.
Last year, around 600 events took place across the country to celebrate Love Parks Week, attracting over 400,000 people. This year looks set to be even bigger.
