England’s strongest men coming to battle at Salt Ayre Sports Centre

Local competitor Shane Jerman
A competition to find ‘England's Strongest Man Under 90kg’ is taking place at Salt Ayre Sports Centre this month and two Morecambe men have made the final.
Twelve athletes from all over the country will be battling it out over 6 grueling events to be awarded the prestigious title of England's Strongest Man under 90kg. The events will include the Giant Axle Squat, the Four Log Challenge and the Atlas Stone Run.
Representing the north are two local competitors Kenny Cardwell and Shane Jerman who are both from Morecambe. Kenny aged 23 is the reigning Olympic Dragon under 90kg champion and was placed second at the northern qualifier by a single point and is looking to go one better at the finals. Kenny works for Lancaster City Council at Salt Ayre Sports Centre as a gym instructor and life guard.
Shane is only 20 years old and works for the NHS. He took the fourth and final qualifying spot at the northern heat in his first ever competition. He is looking to put the experience he gathered at that competition into practice and is aiming for a podium finish.
Though good friends and training partners, there is a definite rivalry developing between the two, so while they are battling for the England’s Strongest Man under 90kg title they will also be battling it out for local bragging rights!
Shane Jerman only just started competing in recent months but has been training since he was 13 years old. He currently trains three times a week in the gym and one day a week on Strongman events at home. He said: “I really enjoy it, Strongman events, like lifting atlas stones, are more fun then normal training and my long term aim is to get into the higher weight class.”
The winner of England’s Strongest Man Under 90kg will not only win the prestigious title but there is a trophy and other top prizes up for grabs as well as a qualification to enter Britain’s Strongman Under 90kg competition.
If you want to come along and support our local competitors Kenny and Shane, the competition takes place on Sunday 20 June from 12pm - 4pm in Salt Ayre's sports hall. Tickets cost £2 for adults and £1 for children. The event is being supported by Lancaster Sports Nutrition who will be on hand throughout the day to offer free nutrition and supplement advice as well as give some very special offers only available on the day.
