Free swimming for over 60s ceases as part of £10.5bn cuts

Public swimming pools in the Lancaster district will no longer be offering free swimming to people aged over 60 due to Government cuts in public spending.

Earlier this month, the Government announced it was planning to freeze or cancel £10.5bn worth of projects announced by the previous government. These cuts included free swimming for over 60s which was introduced last year as part of the Swim4life initiative.

As from 1 August 2010, free access will no longer be available at any public casual swimming sessions at Lancaster City Council’s Salt Ayre Sports Centre and its community swimming pools in Heysham, Hornby and Carnforth.

Coun June Ashworth, Cabinet member with responsibility cultural services said: “Swimming is one of the most popular ways for people in this country to keep fit which is why it is regrettable that local people who are seeking a low impact form of exercise as a way of staying fit, healthy and mobile will no longer be able to swim for free in their local pool.

"It is hoped that those who have benefitted from the initiative since April last year will continue to reap the benefits that our facilities provide."
