City council and the Duchy of Lancaster work together to clean up the Lune

LANCASTER City Council and the Duchy of Lancaster joined forces at the weekend to clear away rubbish washed up by the River Lune.

City council workers spent the weekend clearing over 3.5 tonnes of flotsam, jetsam and general rubbish that had gathered along the stretch of riverbank in Skerton.

The Duchy of Lancaster owns the river up to the high water mark and contributed half the cost of clearing up the rubbish.

Coun Jon Barry, Cabinet member with responsibility for the environment, said: “These tidal areas aren’t directly the responsibility of either the city council or the Duchy of Lancaster but they are very visible locations which looked a mess.

“I’m grateful to the Duchy for helping us to clear up these areas so they look better for everyone.”
