Dodgeball Festival 2010
Lancaster City Council held its second Dodgeball Festival at Salt Ayre Sports Centre earlier this month.
The festival was attended by 14 teams of year four, five and six pupils from local primary schools.
The competition was split into three groups. It was these early group games that provided some of the best action of the day. With five courts running at the same time the spectators couldn’t keep up with the fast and furious pace of the children.
There were some very well contested games during the group stages that saw the game between Ridge A and Christchurch A draw 2 each. However, it was Ryelands that everyone was watching during the group stages as they continued to win their games with some impressive scores.
The format of the competition meant that the top two teams from each group and the two highest placed runners-up would go through to the quarter finals. All the teams at this point were capable of beating each other and this made some compelling viewing. The game of the quarter finals must go to Moorside A and Lancaster Road as only sudden death could separate the teams.
The semi finals were set. Trumacar met Lancaster Road with Trumacar proving too strong for Mr Main’s young outfit. The other semi was a great contest with Ryelands beating Moorside B 3-0. However respect goes out to Moorside B who played outstanding throughout the whole event.
The final, between Trumacar and Ryelands saw the two most consistent teams of the day competing in what was a very close final. With many spectators including children, teachers and parents cheering on, it was Trumacar that proved too strong for Ryelands winning 2-0.
Trumacar keep the Dodgeball Festival Cup for one year whilst Head Coach Mrs Moore devises a plan to defend the trophy next year.
Every competitor received a medal for their efforts.
Scott Wilcock, Leisure Development Officer said: “Dodgeball this year has yet again proved to be one of the most popular sports activities we provide. Therefore because of this and the success of last year’s festival we decided to open it up to even more teams this year.”
A massive thanks goes to the volunteers who refereed the event. They certainly had the hardest job of the day.
All the teams that took part played the competition in the spirit in which it was intended, with the main aims being fair play, fun, enjoyment and participation.
