Time honoured Lancaster
A NEW database containing archaeological data for the historic core of Lancaster will be unveiled on March 30.
Lancaster's Urban Archaeological Database (UAD) contains information on all the known pre-1800 archaeological material found within the city centre. It makes use of a wide variety of sources such as historic maps, photographs and paintings, aerial photographs, museum collections and oral evidence.
In addition, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data was used to create detailed ground surface models.
The UAD has been researched and created by Lancaster-based Oxford Archaeology North over several years, with funding provided by English Heritage.
Roger M Thomas, Head of Urban Archaeology, English Heritage said: "Some years back, we recognised that Lancaster, one of the most important historic cities in England, needed a detailed database and mapping of its rich archaeological and historic heritage. English Heritage is delighted that it could help Lancaster City Council to produce this as part of its national programme of such projects.
"The project has been carried out very skilfully by Oxford Archaeology North on behalf of the city council and we are very pleased with the end result. We are sure that it will be of great benefit to the city - this new resource will help everyone concerned to protect and celebrate Lancaster’s rich history and heritage."
The database provides more comprehensive and readily available information about Lancaster's archaeology, helping planners and developers to make quicker and more informed decisions about archaeology when protecting the city's architectural heritage.
It is hoped that in the longer-term it can be made more widely available to the public as a source of material for local history and education.
The UAD will form part of the Historic Environment Record (HER) held by Lancashire County Council, and it will be managed and maintained by them. It can be accessed by contacting the Lancashire County Archaeological Service, based in Preston.
