Everybody's talking about Skerton

This summer children and parents in Skerton have been having their say about how good their community is and how it could be made even better.

At the St Luke's summer playscheme in August, children were asked what they thought was great about Skerton, and what three smallest changes would make the biggest difference to the area.

Parents attending St Luke's fete were also asked what they thought about the area.

As part of the government's Connecting Communities project, Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council are working with organisations such as the Police, Jobcentre Plus, Skerton High School, local residents' associations and local children's centres, to help shape the future of Skerton.

Since May this year ‘Big Conversations’ have been taking place, where residents are asked what they think about Skerton, and how it could be improved.

Councillor June Ashworth, Cabinet member with responsibility for Children and Young People, who attended the fete said: "The Big Conversations provide an ideal opportunity for the people of Skerton to say what they really think about their area.

"This isn’t about the council or any other organisation deciding what changes should be made. It’s about organisations working better and working together with the people who live here to shape the future so that they can be proud, think positively and take some responsibility for their local area."

There are still plenty of opportunities for people to have their say, as representatives will be going out and about over the coming weeks to find out people's views, and two sessions in September will focus specifically on the views of young parents, and older people.

Look out for postcards asking two key questions: tell us a story of what is great about Skerton, and what are the three smallest things that would make the biggest difference.

After all the questions a celebration event will be held in October, where people's views will be pulled together and a community plan will start to be developed.
