Refurbishment of Festival Market toilets gets underway
Provision of new 'pay as you go' and 'changing place' facilities
Work has started to refurbish the public toilets at Morecambe's Festival Market.
The improvements are expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete and will see the provision of a new 'pay as you go' facility and the district's first 'changing place' for those with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).
Coun Jon Barry, cabinet member with responsibility for markets, said: “Standard disabled toilets do not meet the needs of thousands of people, including the 40,000 people with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
“Without adequate facilities, families often have to change the person they care for on a cramped and dirty toilet floor. The alternative is to limit outings to a few short hours, or not go out at all.
“Changing place toilets have a height-adjustable changing bench, a hoist and plenty of space and can make all the difference to someone with profound and multiple learning disabilities."
The refurbishment and ongoing maintenance of the toilets is being carried out by our partner Danfo and is being funded by Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council's Aiming Higher for Disabled Children Fund.
