Salt Ayre Sports Centre will be celebrating the start of the London Paralympic Games with a day of free sporting activities.

The event takes place on Wednesday, August 29 and is for children and adults with disabilities and their families.

Participants can choose from a number of sports including cycling, football, multi-sports, athletics and archery. Everyone taking part will be presented with a medal by Lancaster City Council for all their hard work throughout the day.

Children can participate in two sporting sessions in the morning (10am to 11am and 11.30am to 12.30pm) and enjoy a free swim in the afternoon.

Adults can enjoy their free swim in the morning and take part in two sporting activities in the afternoon (1pm to 2pm and 2.30pm to 3.30pm).

Councillor Ron Sands, Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism and culture, said: “What better way to celebrate the start of the Paralympic Games than providing a day of free sport at Salt Ayre Sports Centre which has excellent facilities and is able to cater for everyone.

“I’m sure everyone attending will have a fantastic day and that the Paralympics combined with an enjoyable day of sporting activity at Salt Ayre Sports Centre will inspire local people to continue enjoying sport in the future.”

To register to take part in two of the activities on offer contact Louise Taylor on 01524 582826 or email ltaylor@lancaster.gov.uk

Registration on the day begins at 9am in the café at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Booking in advance is advisable to avoid disappointment. Activities are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Please note that a carer or a responsible adult must accompany children and any adults with learning disabilities throughout the day.
