Competition winners have got the bottle

Recycling winners - Lynda Fitchie, Coun David Smith, Dale Pye and Zach Pye
Residents from Lancaster and Morecambe have used their knowledge of recycling to win a competition run by Lancaster City Council.
Brothers Zach and Dale Pye from Lancaster and Lynda Fitchie from Morecambe correctly managed to guess how many plastic bottles were crushed into a recycling box. Zach and Dale scooped an e-book reader, whilst Lynda bagged herself an iPod Shuffle.
More than 140 people entered the competition. Zach and Dale and Lynda correctly guessed that there were 63 bottles contained inside the plastic recycling box.
Lancaster City Council launched the competition to coincide with Recycle Week to raise awareness of the plight of plastic bottles. In the UK, 15 million plastic bottles are used every day, but less than 50% of that number is recycled.
Dale Pye said: “It was a great surprise when we found out that we’d won. We always make sure we help out with the recycling at home, so we’re glad to have put that knowledge to good use.”
Coun David Smith, Cabinet member with responsibility for Environmental Services, said: “We launched the competition to make sure people were aware that plastic bottles could be recycled in the district. It was great to see that so many people entered the competition and it was a pleasure to present Dale, Zach and Lynda with their prizes.”
