A local crown green bowling project is encouraging local youngsters to try out the sport with help from Lancaster City Council.

The project started ten years ago in Regent Park when local bowling enthusiasts Brian Cooke and Gloria Lenartowicz started to get young people involved in the game.

After qualifying as a British Crown Green coach and with the assistance of two other coaches, the scheme grew to include all ages and became a great success and is now known as the Regent Park Crown Green Bowling Tuition Centre.

Brian Cooke credits Lancaster City Council with helping the centre to encourage more people into the sport. He said: “The best thing we did was to contact Sharon Wilson, Promenade and Parks Manager from Lancaster City Council, who said she would give us the support we needed.

“Last year, together with the council, we started a programme to get schools involved in our sport. We have worked with pupils from Morecambe High School and the Sport and Play Officers from Lancaster City Council to provide a very successful three day seminar at Happy Mount Park.

“I feel sure that with the help of Lancaster City Council, schools and local bowling clubs we can continue to make this happen. We need to remember that the younger generation are the future of our sport.”

The project is looking to continue working with local schools by providing free tuition.
