Some of the country’s strongest men will line up at Salt Ayre Sports Centre next month in a bid to be crowned Britain's Strongest Man u105kg.

Twelve athletes who have qualified from England's, Wales' and Scotland's Strongest Man u105kg competitions will battle it out for the ultimate title of Britain's Strongest Man u105kg recently vacated by Morecambe's Graham Hicks. Graham is now competing in the heavyweight division and working his way to World's Strongest Man.

Graham will be making sure the new champion is worthy of the title by refereeing this year's event which will test the athletes strength, speed and endurance as they face the challenge of the power stairs, deadlift, log lift medley, carry and drag race, giant axle squat, and the mighty atlas stones.

The favourite to win the 2012 title is discus thrower turned strongman and current England's Strongest Man u105kg, Ben Kelsey. Ben has swept away the competition at recent u105kg contests but will face a fierce challenge from the Scottish champion and Commonwealth Games weightlifter Stuart Yule and the Welsh champion Anthony Griffiths.

England's Strongest Man runner-up Daz Clarke will also be looking to turn his raw potential and strength into success and avenge his defeat by Ben in what will only be his fifth competition.

The event will take place on Sunday July 22 from 12pm. Spectators are welcome. Admission costs £4 adults and £1 children. The event is indoors and seating and refreshments will be available.

Coun Ron Sands, Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism and culture, said: "It's with great pride that our very own Salt Ayre Sports Centre has been chosen to host this prestigious national competition. The event will no doubt attract an audience from far and wide to our district as some of Britain's strongest men battle it out in what sounds to be an exciting but gruelling competition."

So why not head down to Salt Ayre to cheer on the strongmen and see who will be crowned Great Britain's Strongest Man u105kg 2012.
