Reopening of Cockle and Mussel fisheries in the North West

The North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NWIFCA) has authorised the opening of the seed mussel fishery at Heysham Flat in Morecambe Bay.

The seed mussel fishery at Heysham Flat opened on Wednesday September 26 . Fishermen must hold a Byelaw 3 permit and an NWIFCA authorisation to fish for undersize mussels. Access is only permitted from Battery car park on Heysham promenade, Monday-Friday after 6am. All quad bikes require an access permit from Lancaster City Council - telephone 01524 582833.

Due to the increase in fishing activity in this area, Lancaster City Council is urging members of the public to exercise caution whist walking along the Battery end of Morecambe promenade and ensure all dogs are kept on leads.
