What's New In Your Cemeteries

Flowers in Torrisholme Cemetery
Lancaster City Council would like to take this opportunity to update you on improvements made to the various cemeteries over the last year, together with future projects under consideration.
Chapels
The chapels in Hale Carr, Scotforth, Skerton and Torrisholme cemeteries have all been fitted with loop systems to assist the hard of hearing and have been painted internally and externally. Hale Carr, Scotforth and Torrisholme have also had additional heating appliances installed.
Carnforth Cemetery
- New garden of remembrance completed
- New sign erected
Hale Carr Cemetery
- Meadowland green burial area concept started
Lancaster Cemetery
- 3-year memorial safety project completed
2009/10
- 50% of grassed areas not to be cut to promote wildlife and wildflowers
Morecambe Cemetery
- Main path resurfaced.
- Perimeter fencing funded by Friends Group and replaced by Community Payback team.
2009/10
- Creation of wildflower areas in conjunction with Friends Group
Scotforth Cemetery
- New plot with raft foundations for secure fixing of headstones created.
Skerton Cemetery
2009/10
- Path resurfacing adjacent to chapel.
Torrisholme Cemetery
- Woodland burial area completed with information leaflet.
- Heritage Walk with information leaflet.
- Green Flag awarded.
- Successful Open Day held in July in conjunction with Friends Group.
- Friends Group provided bird feeders, nest boxes and maintain their own flower bed.
- Friends Group hold monthly “tidy up” sessions and organise events, e.g. Mothers and Fathers Day, Christmas Carol Service, etc.
2009/10
- New cremated remains vault section to be created.
- Baby and infant burial area to be created.
- Maintain Green Flag standards.
- Consider provision of disabled compliant public toilet.
