Carnforth and Cannon Hill Conservation Area Appraisals

Draft conservation area appraisals for both conservation areas are now available to view (they can be downloaded from the right-hand side of this page), and we would welcome any comments you might have to make about the documents.

Paper copies can also be viewed in Lancaster and Morecambe Town Halls, or in Lancaster, Morecambe and Carnforth Libraries, during normal opening hours.

The public consultation period will run until 15 March 2013.

What is a conservation area?

Conservation areas are designated under the Planning (Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas) Act 1990, and are 'areas of special architectural or historic interest the character and appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance'. Designation introduces a general control over the demolition of unlisted buildings and provides the basis for policies designed to preserve or enhance all the aspects of character or appearance that define an area's special interest.

What is a conservation area appraisal?

These appraisals have been produced to define and record the special architectural and historic interest of these conservation areas, following their designations in 2010/11.

An appraisal should help lead to an understanding and articulation of its character which can be used to develop a robust policy framework for planning decisions. An adopted appraisal will be material to appeal decisions.
