Environmental Management

This section covers a wide range of activities involved with having a direct management role with some sensitive environments which make up Lancaster District. The team's engineering specialists ensure that the district's coastal defences are maintained and work closely with the Environment Agency to ensure that flood risk management is operationally sound. They engage fully with the North West Coastal Forum to prepare and update the Shoreline Management Plan.

The team's project engineers commission construction projects for the city council and engage in detailed design of major alterations to the public realm. They have been responsible for implementing the city council's Cycling Demonstration Town project.

The section also includes the Arnside/Silverdale AONB Unit which is based at Arnside Station and manages the council's responsibilities in this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's activities range from producing and implementing a management plan for the area, leading volunteers in maintaining the landscape and promoting it to all sectors of the community. The unit maintains the city council's two nature reserves at Warton Crag and Trowbarrow and runs a Sustainable Development Fund to give grant aid to small organisation's to help with sustainable community projects.
