Information on the Local Plan (formerly the Local Development Framework)


What is the Local Plan?

The Local Plan (formerly the Local Development Framework) is the local guidance for planning in the district of Lancaster. The council is updating its existing planning policies for how planning applications will be determined and identifying areas of the district to be allocated for development and areas which should be protected for their environmental, social and/or economic value. The documents currently being prepared are:

Once completed these three documents will, along with the Lancaster District Core Strategy (adopted in 2008), form the new Lancaster District Local Plan.

The Draft Preferred Option Consultation

Consultation on the Development Management DPD, Land Allocations DPD and Morecambe Area Action Plan is now closed but was available from 22 October to 14 December 2012. Officers are currently working on a report of the findings from this consultation which will be available to view soon.


Lancaster District Core Strategy (2008)

The Core Strategy was adopted on 23 July 2008. It provides a strategic approach to deliver sustainable growth in the district, through the provision of new homes, jobs and identifying areas which require regeneration and conservation. This forms the basis for the Development Management DPD, Land Allocations DPD and Morecambe AAP. Please click here for further information on the Lancaster District Core Strategy.


Development Management DPD

The Development Management DPD will be used to determine future planning applications. It will contain detailed locations, design and sustainability criteria for assessing applications and will apply to all types of development across the district. Land Allocations DPD

The Land Allocations DPD will identify land to meet the future development needs of the district, including housing, commercial and community development. It will also identify land and areas which should protected because of its environmental, economic or social value. Please click here for further information on the Land Allocations DPD.


Morecambe Area Action Plan

The Morecambe AAP will be a framework to manage development and change in central Morecambe. It will include land allocations and development management policies specific to the Central Morecambe area. It will direct investment, give increased certainty to potential investors, build confidence and assist the council in securing funding and facilitating development.
