What is a Tree Preservation Order?

A Tree Preservation Order (referred to as a TPO) is an order made by the local planning authority in respect of trees and woodlands.

A local planning authority has the power to make a TPO in Part VIII of the Town & Country Planning Act 1990 and in the Town & Country Planning (Trees) Regulations 1999.

The principal effect of a TPO is to prohibit the:

  • Cutting down
  • Uprooting
  • Topping
  • Lopping
  • Wilful damage, or
  • Wilful destruction of protected trees or woodlands

Guidance Notes For Proposed Tree Works

Please read these notes before making your application – a complete application will help us to deal with your request promptly

Introduction

Please complete the relevant form if you wish to:

  • Carry out any works (including pruning or felling) to a tree or trees protected by a tree preservation order
  • Carry out any works (including pruning or felling) to a tree or trees in a Conservation Area, but not specifically protected by a Tree Preservation Order

Site Plan

All applications should include a site plan accurately showing the location of each tree you are proposing works to in relation to site features, site boundaries and adjoining properties.

Copies of the site location plans and Tree Preservation Order plans may be obtained from us.

Description and Justification of Proposed Works

So that the nature and purpose of your application can be properly understood please provide a full and detailed description of the proposed works to each tree and of the reasons for making the application. Marked up photos can often help to describe the proposed works.

Forms

Please check that all questions on the application forms have been answered and that the forms are signed.

Fees

No fee is payable for applications for tree works

Please do not make a wasted journey. Staff are available to give general advice during normal office hours: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
