Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC)
HWRC sites are operated by SITA UK (not Lancaster City Council) and are staffed by a dedicated team who will assist you during your visit.
Location
There are two household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) at:
- Salt Ayre, Ovangle Road, Lancaster
- Keer Bridge, Scotland Road, Carnforth
Opening hours
HWRCs are open seven days a week, 362 days a year (closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day)
• 8am - 7pm 1st March - 31st October
• 9am - 6pm 1st November - 28/29th February
What can I recycle at the HWRC?
Asbestos, books, cans, cardboard, electronic equipment, fluorescent tubes, fridges/freezers, gas bottles, glass, garden waste, hard plastics, household and car batteries, household chemicals, paper, paint, plastic bags, plastic bottles, plaster, plasterboard, printer cartridges, rubble, hardcore, scrap metal, textiles, shoes, TV's, monitors, tyres.
Access policy and permits
The HWRC's are for householders only. HWRCs operate an Access Policy and Permit Scheme which restricts use of the sites by certain large vehicles and trailers. This policy helps to increase safety, reduce congestion and prevent businesses using the sites.
Please also remember that the HWRC's do not accept trade waste of any description.

On Street Recycling Banks
Residents and shoppers in Lancaster city centre now have the convenience of recycling more of their rubbish on the go, thanks to new on-street recycling banks.
The aim of the containers is to make recycling easier and more convenient whilst out and about. Using these containers will enable items that will have previously gone to landfill to be recycled ,diverting valuable resources from landfill will help increase Lancaster’s recycling rate and enable residents, visitors and shoppers the opportunity to continue with their good recycling habits.
Materials that can be recycled include paper, cardboard, glass, cans and plastic bottles.

- George Street
- Meeting House Lane
- Common Garden Street
Further on-street recycling containers are planned to be placed in Sun Street and in Market Square in the near future.
