If all the rubbish produced in a year in Lancaster District were placed in bin wagons, the wagons would stretch from Morecambe to Blackpool - what a waste!

AEROSOLSAerosol can

Avoid buying aerosols - buy pump sprays instead. Making aerosols uses a lot of energy and the gases used may damage the environment. Although the hole in the ozone layer above the Antarctic appears to be shrinking, the ozone layer will still be vulnerable for at least another 10 years. Do NOT put aerosol cans into recycling banks. Dispose of in your normal rubbish.

NEVER puncture, burn or crush old aerosol cans
ALUMINIUM

The extraction of the raw material, bauxite, is a polluting process. Recycling aluminium saves 95% of energy used in manufacturing new cans.

Aluminium & steel can recycling banks - see 'Recycling Sites in the Lancaster District'

Aluminium Cans

You can put ALL your cans, including steel food cans (rinsed please) in your kerbside box for collection or  in any of the Can Recycling Banks in Lancaster District, even if it says ‘drinks cans only’ (as in Caton). Please put the ring pull back in the can before recycling it

COMPUTERS & COMPUTER PARTS

Over 3,000 computers a day are thrown away in the UK. Although the average computer contains over 2 kilogrammes of lead only 100g can usually be recycled

The manufacturing of a 6-inch silicon wafer uses: 2275 gallons of de-ionised water, 285kWh of energy (the equivalent of leaving a low-energy light bulb on for over 100 years) and 3200 cubic feet of bulk gases

Linux is an operating system (like Windows) that can be used on old computers as well as new ones. If your computer is too slow for Microsoft Windows you can still run Linux on it. Although it has a reputation of being for computer geeks, Linux has improved considerably over the last few years, and can now be run by anyone who is able to use Windows. Some of the advantages of Linux are: it’s free, no more worries about viruses, it's very stable so no more crashes and losing data, it uses less electricity than Windows. CORK "Good for people, good for wildlife"

The increasing use of artificial ‘closures’ in wine bottles instead of natural corks presents a threat to the cork oak forests of southern Europe and the people and wildlife that depend on this ancient habitat and sustainable industry. A fall in demand for cork as a result of this switch to plastic stoppers and screwcaps in wine bottles would lead to many cork estates being converted to other land uses, such as intensive farming or timber plantations. If current trends continue, the wildlife-rich montados and dehesas could disappear within 20-30 years.

Many threatened species, such as Bonelli's Eagle and the Iberian lynx, depend on cork oak forests (Montada) for their survival. Other animals found in cork oak forests include hares, nesting black storks, Iberian Imperial Eagles, kites, southern grey shrikes, black vultures, wolves and wild boars. The forests also provide the ideal winter habitat for millions of migratory birds, such as robins, thrushes, chaffinches and woodpeckers, and the 60,000 herons that come from Northern Europe.

The RSPB has produced a leaflet on the benefits of cork, called "Cork – good for people, good for wildlife" which is available on the RSPB website

How you can help…

You can write to retailers asking them to label their wines with the type of closure used and to ask their other suppliers to follow suit.

If you find an artificial closure in your bottle of wine, complain to the shop where you bought it. This will help retailers better understand customer preferences.

Wine producers often hear only what the supermarkets tell them. If you write directly to the producer expressing your views, it helps them understand customer preferences. Producers' and importers' addresses are usually found on wine labels.

Some retailers claim that real corks cause ‘tainting’ in wine – is this true? We doubt it is as the compound, TCA, that causes mustiness or 'taint' in wine is commonly present in the environment. It can contaminate cork, but is also found in bottles, barrels, and the grapes themselves. Therefore, wine can be 'tainted' regardless of the closure used. Retailers do not identify taint by laboratory analysis and as a result, blame problems including oxidisation, excess preservative, mouldy bottles, pesticides and several unrelated contaminants on cork.

Most UK wine drinkers prefer real cork to artificial closures.

COTTON BUDS

Buy biodegradable (paper) cotton buds, not plastic. Organic cotton buds are available too. See Single Step Wholefoods, 78a Penny Street, Lancaster Tel: 01524 63021

DO NOT put cotton buds or other personal items down your toilet as they can pollute beaches and be harmful to wildlife. Bag them and bin them instead.

Dispose of dog waste in dog waste bins or litter bins in sealed bags or take home and dispose. Please do not put dog waste in your home composter.

Dog waste bags or nappy bags (also suitable for disposing dog waste) can be bought from supermarkets, pet shops, vets and RSPCA shops. Biodegradable plastic or paper bags are best for the environment.

DRUGS see ‘MEDICINES’
EGG BOXES

If you know someone who keeps chickens, they may want your empty egg boxes. They can also be used to prop up potatoes to sprout, for seeding incubation and are ideal for sound proofing garages or studios. One enterprising recycling blogger even uses cardboard egg boxes as firelighters - "Fill each cup and the top with dryer lint. Save your candle stubs, melt them in a clean can and pour over the link. You can get a wood or charcoal fire lit easily!"

Otherwise, egg boxes can either be returned to shops and markets (ask first as many no longer take them back) or used for crafts or sowing seeds. The cardboard ones can be screw up and put in your compost heap or you can put them in your kerbside box for collection

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

Most electrical waste is covered by the European WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive. This directive makes it illegal to dump untreated electrical and electronic equipment in landfill sites and is aimed at increasing reuse and recycling, thus saving valuable resources and stopping contaminants reaching landfill - such as bromide transistors.

From August 2005 all electrical appliances (such as washers, toasters, fluorescent tubes and televisions) have to be collected separately and sent for either re-use, or if this is not viable, recycling and reprocessing. Retailers must offer either a like-for-like take-back service or another method for householders to dispose of appliances when a new one is purchased. The cost of the reprocessing and collection from an authorised collection point will be borne by the manufacturers.

So, what does this mean to you the householder?

1. Firstly, you should ask your local registered re-use organisation to see if they want your unwanted appliances. This will not only save the environment but also benefit another person locally. (See information below and on page 30 and 42)

2. When you buy a new appliance (and you are sure your old appliance cannot be reused) ask the shop about their take-back scheme (they are obliged to have one)

3. Finally, electrical items will no longer go into general landfill skips or be crushed during bulky collections. As part of the directive you, the householder, will be encouraged through markings on electrical equipment to separate it from your general waste. Those responsible for collecting your unwanted electrical equipment (e.g. local council, domestic appliance retailers, etc.) will have to ensure they carry it in such a way that allows the items to be reused or recycled.

The WEEE Directive is a great opportunity for us all to help promote the re-use of unwanted electrical items; and if it cannot be reused, it should be recycled. By promoting re-use you can reduce waste, help the environment and also help local people who are on a low wage access a reconditioned appliance for a low cost.

Furniture Matters will collect domestic electrical appliances e.g. cookers, washers, microwaves to pass on to local disadvantaged people Tel: 01524 426622

Bulky Matters will collect items such as fridges, freezers and other large items. Tel: 01524 582491, to arrange a collection.

NAPPIES

Every day, 8 million nappies are dumped in landfill sites in the UK. They take hundreds of years to rot down and contribute to toxic liquid seeping out of landfill.

More and more parents are using re-usable nappies which can save them about £500 for a first child over a two and a half year period. Modern cloth nappies are shaped & fitted and fasten easily with no need for pins! They are soft & comfortable & come in a variety of styles, patterns and sizes

Boiling & soaking are not necessary and waste energy - with appropriate washing agents (organic agents availbale), 40C in a modern washing machine is sufficient, simple and sanitary.

Biodegradable 'one-way' nappy liners can be used inside a real nappy. They are simply lifted out and then hygienically flushed down the loo. See Single Step Wholefoods, 78a Penny Street, Lancaster (Tel: 01524 63021) who sell these.

Team Lollipop can answer all your questions about cloth nappies on their website http://www.teamlollipop.co.uk/

The Natty Nappies website also provides a wealth of information on reusable nappies

See the Bottom Line Project to get £45 towards the cost of real nappies or £70 for 2 or more babies under 18 months old. Lancashire residents only.
