Olympic Torch Relay traffic disruption - advice for residents and businesses

To make sure the Olympic Torch Relay can pass safely through the district, the police will be implementing rolling road closures along the route to allow the torch and its convoy to pass safely.

This means that traffic will be stopped in stages with sections of the route being closed around 10 minutes before the convoy arrives and then reopening once the convoy has gone through.

The convoy itself will be travelling at a very slow speed and it is estimated there may be delays of around 45 mins. Motorists should expect delays on the day and are asked to try to avoid the route if possible. However, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity so please bear with us on the day.

In addition, the following roads will close to all traffic on 22nd June:

  • Morecambe - Elms Court, Elms Grove and Back Carlton Street (8am to 12pm)
  • Lancaster - Belle Vue Terrace (12pm - 2pm)

You can view a map of the route and approximate times the relay will be passing along each road .

A large number of people are expected to see the relay and this will also increase the volume of traffic on the roads.

Deliveries and collections from businesses along the route and associated roads are likely to experience disruption. We advise businesses to prepare now by changing deliveries/collections.

People working locally are advised to travel to work using public transport, walk or cycle.  If a car is needed then it is recommended that people should avoid travel during the times the torch will passing through the district.

Following the Torch Relay there will be a cycle race in Lancaster which may also lead to some disruption.

This will require the closure of three car parks (Charter House, Moor Mills 1 and 2) from 6pm on the evening of Thursday 21 June until 1am on Saturday 23 June, and Nelson Street car park will close at 5pm on Friday 22 June. Some roads in this area will also close on Friday 22 June to allow for preparations for the cycle race to take place.

Residents who live and park in this area are being written to separately.
